Member Spotlight: Peter

How old are? 34

What is your career/job? I am a personal injury attorney, helping people injured in car crashes and other calamities. 

How long have you been doing CrossFit and/or Yoga? I have been doing olympic-style lifting since high school, but I joined Metacomet CrossFit about 18 months ago. 

Why did you decide to try CrossFit and/or Yoga? I tried self-motivated training, a/k/a walking around the local gym for a long time. I saw no results. I needed someone to guide my workouts, track my progress and push me to achieve more. CrossFit seemed like a good fit. 

How often do you go to Metacomet?  4-5 times per week. 

How do you find the time to get it all in? As a husband, father of 4 children and a litigation attorney, this is my primary activity for stress relief. The only way I am able to do it all is to prioritize my health and wellness, including CrossFit. 

What is your favorite WOD (workout of the day) or asana (pose)? CrossFit Total (shoulder press, deadlift, back squat).

What results or changes have you experienced – physically/mentally? Physically, I have seen my body return to an athletic form. I feel more energized. Mentally, CrossFit teaches you perseverance and self-motivation. You leave with a feeling of accomplishment, knowing you succeeded, both individually and as a group. 

What is your diet/lifestyle like? While CrossFit makes you stronger, nutrition is the key to weight loss. I have used CrossFit in conjunction with a nutritionist to lose weight and gain energy. A high protein, moderate fat diet, with limited carbohydrates and sugars, is when I feel my best.  

How would you describe the Metacomet community?  Supportive and member focussed. I have been other gyms and programs that were not inviting and used guilt, instead of encouragement, to attempt to obtain results. A session at Metacomet is physically challenging and mentally uplifting. 

What would you tell someone considering CrossFit and/or Yoga?  Try them both and challenge yourself! Exercise is intimidating. It is easier to stay home and watch Netflix. The first time you walk into a CrossFit gym or Yoga studio, it can be scary. I put off joining a CrossFit gym for over a year and I am still intimidated by yoga. Once you try something new, it can reinvigorate your spirit. That is something I have found by refocusing on health and physical activity.
